LMNGNO is partnering with Captain Richie Blink and Plaquemines Parish Tourism to prepare a new birding trail for public access. Fort Woods is located just south of Fort Jackson near Triumph, LA, just a few miles from the end of the Mississippi River. This is a mature forest with minimal invasive species that has great potential for birding, including a resident nesting pair of bald eagles.

This is a great opportunity for our chapter to do our own service project in a corner of our region that few of us visit.

Date: Saturday, March 29, 2025
Time: Optional birding: 8:00-9:30 AM.
Trail work: 10:00 AM until we’re done. (Come and go as you wish).
Address: The entrance to the park is shown here, just past the Fort Jackson Museum and Welcome Center. You can park along the road. It
Open to: All certified members, friends of the LMNGNO, and those undergoing certification. Children must be accompanied by a guardian.
Cost: No cost to attend.
Agenda: To prepare the trail, we will install trail markers, clear brush, and pick up trash. We also need people to make an eBird list, a tree species list, and to contribute observations to the park’s new iNaturalist project, all of which will be used to promote the new trail to the public. We have a job for everyone! After the work day, there may be an opportunity to go out onto the Gulf on Captain Richie’s boat. More info on that to follow!
Hours: This activity counts for volunteer hours.
Bring: Dress to be outside. Work boots and gloves are recommended, as well as rubber boots if it has rained recently. Bring water and snacks (although we will provide some as well). For the observation activities, bring binoculars, guidebooks, and charged phones. We will have access to the restroom at the Welcome Center.
Carpooling: If you are interested in carpooling (either driving or riding), let Janna know.
Questions: Contact Janna Wisniewski at [email protected] or (517) 927-4371.
